WORLD'S FIRST HYDROGEN TRAIN

WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

Germany has rolled out world's first hydrogen-powered passenger train.

The Trains are officially called as 'Coradia iLint'

This is the first time in the world that commercial trains being powered by hydrogen-based cells have gone into use for passengers.

The train was manufactured by Alstom, which is one of Europe’s largest railway manufacturers.

Alstom plans to deliver a further 14 Coradia iLint trains to the network by 2021.

WHY THIS HYDROGEN FUEL TRAIN ?  WHY GERMANY LAUNCHED ?

The idea with these Hydrogen based trains is to move away from diesel based systems, which cause more pollution emission.

Air Pollution has become an increasing problem in Germany, with nitrous dioxide causing over 10,000 premature deaths in 2016.

[But in Delhi(very small place in India) in one year 15000 premature deaths due to air-pollution] - This shows, how much we(India) took such matters as serious.

KEY FACTS
  • Coradia iLint is powered by a Hydrogen Fuel tank fitted on its roof.
  • The fuel cell is supplied with Hydrogen and Oxygen from the air.
  • The fuel cell converts Hydrogen and Oxygen into electric power.
  • Excess electricity is stored with onboard Lithium batteries.
  • The train is 100% carbon-neutral and carbon-free which makes it a much more sustainable alternative conventional diesel trains.
  • Besides, the claims speed of up to 87 miles per hour and has a hydrogen storage capacity for a 497-mile range.
  • Each Train costs $7 million (around 50 crore rupees)

Other countries to use this technology

Other countries are also looking into hydrogen trains including Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Italy, and Canada.

In France, the government has already said it wants the first hydrogen train to be on the rails by 2022.
