NEW OIL AND GAS RESERVES FOUND IN INDIA (MP & WB)

WHAT JUST HAPPENED ?

State-owned ONGC (Oil And Natural Gas Corp) discovers oil and gas reserves in Madhya Pradesh & West Bengal.

But, whether they are commercially viable (usable) - That is not sure.

As there are already so many reserves which India have found earlier - But we are not using those because Problem is Oil & Gas present very deep inside the earth, that the amount of extraction is very large than their actual cost.

So, This is not our objective just to extract the oil & gas. Our objective is to make profit from them also.

So, the reserves which ONGC has found recently still need to check whether we can use those or not. [ i.e. to check its commercial viability still left ]

Sedimentary Basins are of many types depends on commercial viability.

The one which ONGC has recently found is of Category-3 Basins.

LOCATION

Madhya Pradesh: The gas deposits were discovered in block in Vindhyan basin. This is 3000 -plus meter deep. and thus it took several months to test its commercial Vaiblity .

West Bengal: Oil and Gas was discovered in well in Ashok Nagar of 24 Parganas District.

BASINS BACKGROUND

Basins - are those area which have potential of Hydrocarbons. We can see so many Basins in India Map. Example:

Rajasthan Basin
Vindhyan Basin
Cauvery Basin
Cambay Basin
Krishna-Godavari Basin

India has 26 sedimentary basins, of which only seven category-I basins have commercial production of oil and gas. Except for Assam shelf, ONGC opened ...

An Oil Basin (also known as Sedimentary Basin) is a depression in the Earth's crust that is formed by plate tectonic.

If enough hydro-carbon rich source rocks (such as limestone) occur at the appropriate depth and with a long enough duration of burial , petroleum system can develop with in the basin.

India has 26 sedimentary basins, of which only seven category-1 basins have commercial production of oil and gas.

Except for Assam shelf, ONGC opened up all other six basins, including

  1. Cambay
  2. Mumbai Offshore
  3. Rajasthan
  4. Krishna - Godavari
  5. Cauvery
  6. Assam-Arakan Fold belt
These all are for commercial production.

There are total four category Basins.
  • Cateory-1 Basins - They have been established for commercial production.
  • Cateory-2 Basins - They are known for accumulation of hydrocarbons but no commercial production has been achieved so far.
  • Cateory-3 Basins - They having hydrocarbons and are considered geologically prospective
  • Cateory-4 Basins - They have uncertain potential may be prospective by analogy with similar basins in the world.
