INDIA BANGLADESH - AGARTALA AKHAURA RAILWAY LINE

WHAT HAPPENED RECENTLY ?

 Recently, Prime minister 'Narendra Modi' along with his Bangladeshi counterpart 'Sheikh Hasina' , CM of Tripura 'Biplab Kumar Deb' and CM of West Bengal 'Mamta Banerjee'  inaugurated the commencement of work for the 'Agartala-Akhaura' railway project through video conferencing.

 Along with the 'Agartala-Akhaura' rail project. Other two projects also discussed.
  1. These include 500 MW additional power supply from India to Bangladesh.
  2.  Rehabilitation of the Kulaura-Shahbazpur section of Bangladesh Railways. 
ABOUT AGARTALA - AKHAURA RAILWAY LINK

 The Agartala-Akhaura rail project was conceptualized in 2010. Later, India and Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a couple of issues including the rail project in 2013. The rail link is expected to be operational in 2019.

The railway project consists of constructing 15.054 KM long railway line.

It provide another link in the cross border connectivity between two countries by connecting 'Akhaura in Bangladesh' with capital city of Tripura, Agartala.

WILL THIS HELP IN TRADE?

Initially, NO  Because Tripura is not a big commercial  hub.

 But, it will develop socio-economic as well as cultural bond between two neighboring countries.

 BIG-PLANS :- TRIPURA TO BECOME GATEWAY TO ASEAN COUNTRIES

 “Prime Minister Modi wants to develop North-East India into HIRA and Astalaxmi. Today’s joint inaugural ceremony is a major step towards that goal.

Tripura would be turned into ‘HIRA’, which is acronym for development in highways, i-ways or Internet services, roadways and airways. 

Referring to eight states of the northeast, he had said the region would be developed into ‘Astalaxmi’.
