MISSION NANDA DEVI - THE LOST NUCLEAR EQUIPMENT - WHY INDIA WORRY ?

BACKGROUND
  • China carried out their first nuclear test in 1964. Hence, US decided to spy on China's nuclear capability.
  • At that time, Russia is a part of USSR and There is no good relation between USSR & US.
  • So, US has no option other than India and decided to take help from India. US spy agency created a device and they want to install it on 'Nanda Devi Peak' which is in India.
  • United States asked if India could plant a sensor. Without any or cross-questioning, India agreed to the covert mission. 
So In 1965,the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) & India's Intelligence Bureau (IB) Jointly undertook a clandestine operation to install a nuclear powered sensing device on India's second highest peak 'Nanda Devi' in the Garhwal Himalayas.
Capt Manmohan Singh Kohli was leading India on this mission. Now the team had to install a tracking device powered by a nuclear snap generator and it was powered by Plutonium-238. If the mission was successful then China would be under the surveillance of USA, without their knowledge.

 India Government many times conveyed - Nanda Devi Mountain is highest peak so it was very difficult to climb. But US officers was adamant and they only want to install the Plutonium-238 powered sensing device on Nanda Devi Peak.

 Indeed, India Government agreed and a Team is constructed consists Local climbers , US officers & Indian Officers.

 They had given a task to climb on Nanda Devi Peak and install the 56-Kg Device on it.

 However, a blizzard and severe cold conditions forced the team to abandon the mission leaving the device on the mountain.

 When the Team returned to the mountain during May 1966, they found out that the whole device including the plutonium pack had been lost in an avalanche.

 WHY HAPPENED RECENTLY - WHY THIS IS IN NEWS NOW ? 

 Uttarakhand tourism minister 'Satpal Maharaj' met Narendra Modi and referred to the failed 1965 Nanda Devi expedition and expressed his apprehensions that an atomic device that had gone missing over 50 years ago may be polluting waters of the Ganga.

If this will happen then many people get die by drinking that water and that could be big disaster.

So, PM Modi agreed and decided to find the lost Plutonium powered device on Nanda - Devi.

NANDA DEVI

Nanda Devi is the second largest mountain in India, and highest located entirely within India.

[ Kangchenjunga mountain which is the higher is on the border of India and Nepal ]

 It is the part of the Greater Himalayas and is located in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. 

 ABOUT DEVICE


Device weight - 56 Kg with 8-10 ft antenna and a SNAP (System for nuclear auxiliary power) Generator.

 USA DID NOT GIVE UP

In 1967, the Americans with the help of Kohli and other Indian climbers successfully installed a second nuclear - powered listening device on the peak.

But, when Kohli reached with his team in 1968 to check the status of device, again they found out that the whole device including the plutonium pack had been lost.

Then the team dug a couple of feet and saw an amazing sight. There was a sound cave formed with the hot generator of device. As the device is too hot it melts the ice and make a cave inside it. And India returned the second device to USA.

 Please Note: Still, We are unable to found the device which was lost in 1965. But we found the equipment which was lost in 1967. So, Do Not get confuse.

 INDIA's TENSION

Kohli feared that since plutonium capsules have a longevity of almost a century , these capsules can cause a large scale contamination of the 'Rishi Ganga', the river that drains the Nanda Devi glacier into the Ganges.
