INDIA's FIRST BIO-FUEL FLIGHT - Q400 - DEHRADUN TO DELHI

WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

India on Monday (27th August 2018) will join the elite club of nations who have operated a flight on alternative source of energy sources like biofuel.

India on Monday will run its first biofuel flight from Dehradun to Delhi.

Basically, This is mixture of conventional air turbine fuel and biofuel.

Spice-jet planning to operate a turboprop, Q-400 from Dehradun to Delhi, using this sustainable alternative.

India is not the first country.

While some advanced countries like US and Australia have tested commercial flights on biofuel.

India is among the first developing nations to make such an attempt.

Blended fuel powers 15-hour Boeing Dreamliner 787-9 flight between LA and Melbourne, reducing carbon emissions by 7.

In this, conventional air turbine fuel and mustard biofuel used.

India is also trying to promote bio-fuels to reduce dependency on fossil fuel.
On August 10, World Biofuel 2018 day was organized in Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the "National Policy on Bio-fuels 2018" .

This policy describes biofuel as produced from renewable resources and used in place of or in blend with diesel, petrol or other fossil fuels for transport and other application.

  • Sources say the plan is that the bio-fuel-powered bombardier Q-400 will take off from Dehradun , fly over the city for 10 minutes and then return there.
  • If the test goes well , then the plane will take off again and this time head to Delhi.
ECONOMICS BEHIND THE MOVE

Environment is one of the reason.

But Main reason is that - Air Companies faces the higher loses example - Air India. Also,The Quarter result of other air lines are not so good.

The objective is to make air-travel economical and bring some respite to the airlines reeling under high fuel price through the use of alternate fuel.

  • Domestic aviation fuel (ATF) rates are now 97% higher. (almost double)
  • Average fair re however down at least 40% from 2014.
ADVANTAGE

Biofuel has the potential to reduce the aviation carbon emission by up to 80 percent.
