HOW CHANDRYAAN-1 FOUND WATER ON MOON - ISRO HELPS NASA's M3 INSTRUMENT

BACKGROUND

Chandryaan-1 was India's first mission to moon launched by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The estimated costs for the project was ₹386 crore.

Launched in October 2008, Operated until August 2009.

This is unmanned lunar probe, launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

With the successful launch of Chandryaan-1, India became the sixth nation to send a mission to the moon.

WHAT HAPPENED RECENTLY

 Recently, NASA Published a report and confirms Water Ice on Moon.
  • A team of NASA scientists has found definitive evidence of frozen water on the moon's surface.
  • The deposits of ice were discovered in patches at the South and North poles of the moon, because of a  small tilt in the moon's rotation axis, where sunlight supply is very less.
  • With enough ice on Moon's surface - within the top few millimeters - water would probably be accessible as a resource for future expeditions and even enable stay on the moon, say NASA.
HOW MUCH WATER ?

 A day after NASA unveiled its analysis of data collected from lunar orbit by Chandryaan-1,. NASA Administrator  said 

"We know that there is a hundreds of billions of tons of water ice on the surface of the moon."

Please Note: Water is in form of Ice in Soil, not in a form of lake.

ISRO Chandryaan-1 lunar probe carried 5 ISRO instruments and 6 Other countries instruments.

The lunar mission carried five ISRO payloads and six payloads from other space agencies including NASA, ESA (European Space Agency), and the Bulgarian Aerospace Agency, which were carried free of cost.

NASA Instrument named - M3 (MOON MINERALOGY MAPPER)  - with this instrument, Now it has confirmed that - there is water on Moon.

 So, Basically, Mission is of India and But instrument which found presence of water is of NASA. That's the reason, NASA published a research paper before ISRO which confirms the presence of water.
As Data directly of this M3 instrument is going to NASA.

WHAT M3 INSTRUMENT DID
  • It noticed which molecule absorb the infrared rays from and prepare a map and which confirm the nature of water whether its a liquid, vapour or solid ice - which is now confirmed that water is in form of ice in soil.
  • This instrument also found - there is a tiny tilt in moon's rotation axis due to which sunlight in very small amount reaches there.
WHO ANNOUNCED FIRST
  • Days after that announcement , ISRO said another of its instrument on Chandryaan-1, the Moon Impact Probe (MIP), had produced compelling evidence of water on the moon. MIP is the ISRO Instrument.
  • ISRO said this evidence was available at least a few months before NASA's announcement. MIP, a 35-KG cube shaped instrument with Tricolor on all the sides is the first Indian object to land on the moon.
Please Note:- Water is available on Moon, This is not new news. Every agency declared decades ago. But the thing is to provide evidence. Which NASA has provided now.

 INDIA LEFT BEHIND

Why the ISRO could not publish the findings of MIP earlier?
The reason is there were some calibration anomalies in the data of which we could not have quantified the amount of water content. As a result, we were not in a position to publish the result.
