CONVERT USED COOKING OIL INTO BIODIESEL - RUCO INITIATIVE BY FSSAI

YES ! You Read it right, Used Cooking-Oil will be used to Make BIO - FUEL

WHAT JUST HAPPENED

Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas observed 'World Bio-Fuel Day' on 10th August 2018.

FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) launched RUCO (Re-purpose Used Cooking Oil) initiative to enable and collection & conversion of used cooking oil to Bio-diesel.

Bio-Diesel is a type of Bio-fuel.

KEY FACTS

This initiative was launched nearly after month FSSAI notified standards for used cooking oil.

According to FSSAI Regulations : Maximum Permissible limit for Total Polar Compounds (TPC) have been set at 25%, beyond which the cooking oil is unsafe for consumption..

If TPC increased more than 25%, Then you can't use it for cooking, BUT we will use that for Bio-diesel.

Under this initiative FSSAI is working with Bio-diesel Association of India (BAI).

FSSAI is also looking at introducing regulations to ensure that companies using large quantities of cooking oil hand over to registered collecting agencies to convert it into biofuel.

BACKGROUND

Currently, Bio-diesel produced from used cooking oil is very small.

But According to FSSAI, India has the potential to recover 200 crore liters of used cooking oil for production of Bio-diesel by 2022.

STEPS TAKEN
  • FSSAI has launched a micro-site to monitor the progress of collection and conversion of Unused cooking oil (UCO) to Biofuel.
  • 64 companies at 101 locations have been identified to enable collection of used cooking oil
McDonald’s has already started converting used cooking oil to biodiesel from 100 outlets in Mumbai and Pune.
This fuel thus created emits 75 percent less carbon than diesel and Petrol, So benefit for Environment also.

PROBLEMS
  • At local level - it's very difficult i.e. you can't go from door to door to collect used cooking oil. That's why as of now only 64 companies selected, where they can pass rules.
  • Bio-diesel association of India demands if we want to compete with normal diesel Then GST needs to be drop on Bio Diesel from 18 to 5 Percent. Though, This is not a big task we can decrease that as Bio-Fuel is used very less so not much loss in revenue on Government after dropping GST.
STEPS TO PRODUCE BIO-FUEL
  • Used Oil is Collected in a container -This oil contains the water and food particles.
  • Then Oil Transports it to a Filtering Plant.
  • Then pumped into a holding tank and heated to dry out the water containing in the oil. Once the water is out, the oil is ready to enter a multi-stage filtering process.
