INDIA's 100th AIRPORT OR SIKKIM FIRST AIRPORT AT PAKYONG
BACKGROUND
Construction of New Airports and the rejuvenation of Old Airports is being done under UDAN scheme. ('Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik')
WHAT JUST HAPPENED?
Since Independence, Sikkim was the only state which does not have own Airport.
Finally, Sikkim is now part of India's aviation map as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the State's first airport at Pakyong on Sep 24.
Coincidentally, This is also the 100th Airport in India.
The Greenfield Airport, located 30 KM from the capital Gangtok.
The airport name is not 'Greenfield' - Greenfield is a category/Tag/Title. This title for those airport which developed by keeping environment factors in mind.
Another Example of Greenfield Airport - Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad (Built in 2008) - This Airport in 2018 has received the 'Airports Council Internationals Airport Service Quality (ASQ) World No 1. Airport Award Trophy.
PAKYONG AIRPORT
Pakyong will start its commercial operations from the first week of October 2018.
First Flight will be Spice-jet.
Spice jet's Bombardier Q-400 aircraft will be ferrying passengers between Sikkim, Guwahati, and Kolkata.
The airport is spread over 201 acres, 4500 feet above sea level.
The airport was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 605 crore and is an 'Engineering marvel'.
There are Rs 1000 crore (more spent for other works like road works, connectivity, electricity and other stuffs (Like carrying materials bear more costs due to slope of mountains)
This is called as 'Engineering Marvel' because it built on slope area where mountains exists.
STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE
The Pakyong airport is located around 60KM from the Indo-China Border.
The airport's 1.75 -KM runway has a width of 30 meter.
Another 75 meter stretch adjacent to the main runway is being constructed for the use of the Indian Air Force.
MILITARY FLIGHT OPERATIONS
It has been reported that IAF would have the ability to land certain military aircraft at the site if necessary.
On March 5, IAF's Dornier -228 aircraft was tested from Pakyong.
WHO WILL DO THE PROTECTION ?
Ministry of Civil aviation - told Protection will be done by Local Police.
But, Ministry of Home Affairs - told that Protection will be done by CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) Due to it's strategic importance.
So, as of now, Dispute b/w MHA & MoCA. Let's see what happen.
TRAVEL TIME CUT
With the new airport, the traveling time to Sikkim will be get cut down by almost 5 hours because earlier, the nearest airport to which the tourist could fly down was Bagdogra in West Bengal.
