World’s First Thermal Battery Plant Unveiled In Andhra Pradesh.

The world's first-ever thermal battery plant will be unveiled in Andhra Pradesh by the state’s Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on August 6, 2018.

Manufactured by the Bharat Energy Storage Technology Private Limited (BEST), the first-of-its-kind batteries will aim to boost renewable sources of energy production and reduce the dependence on non-renewable fossil fuel-based energy generation.

BACKGROUND

Though, Solar power is considered the most reliable source of energy, yet it has its drawbacks.

Energy Generation is not possible after sunset and in high rainfall areas.

This brings in the need for a robust energy of a storage infrastructure i.e. we can store energy.

Hence, the unveiling of the  'THERMAL BATTERY PLANT' is a landmark development in the field of technology and environment protection.

WE ALREADY HAVE LITHIUM ION BATTERIES - THEN WHY NEED OF THIS THERMAL BATTERY PLANT

  • Lithium based batteries are limited by the life-cycle , making it a very expensive proposition with replacement needed every 6-7 years.
  • Lithium based batteries leave high carbon footprint.
  • Lithium's  sensitivity to extreme temperature  requires the energy storage system to be placed in conditioned temperatures , requiring about 8-10 percent energy storage for the cause.

ADVANTAGES OF THERMAL BATTERY
  • The technology help in mitigating 'Carbon Emission'.
  • It can also be used in remote locations, such as hilly terrains and islands.
  • It will also be used to store energy for telecommunication, commercial establishment, electric vehicles and highway charging stations.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS

• In the first phase
, batteries suited for telecommunications, mini or microgrids and electric buses would be manufactured.

The batteries are expected to run for up to 800kms on a single charge.

Under the project, electric buses, produced in collaboration with Bilva Motors, a global consortium, could deliver an 800-kilometre range with a single charge, with the help of BEST's thermal cells.

The cell can be customised to be charged in four or eight hours, depending on the source.

It can also provide output ranging between 5Kwh and 1 Mwh.

The thermal plant is expected to start commercial operations by May 2019.

NOTES

This technology (Thermal Battery), patented in India by Dr Patrick Glynn in 2016, scores over Li-ion batteries due to lesser heat sensitivity, as well as a smaller carbon footprint.

The BEST also aims to set up a Greenfield Project in India, at an estimated cost of Rs. 660 crores, through which nearly 3000 jobs are expected to be created within three years time.

While conforming to the Indian government’s 2030 e-vehicles goal, BEST also plans to make batteries that are completely free of hard metal or inflammable substances, so that re-usable materials could make up 95 per cent of all thermal batteries.

Apart from these urban businesses, the plant is set to provide electricity to rural and remote areas of Andhra Pradesh

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LITHIUM BASED AND THERMAL BATTERY PROCESS

Li-ion batteries work on the basis of electrical energy.

Energy is derived from this battery, when lithium atoms turn into lithium ions (Li+), and get stored when this reaction reverses.

Thermal batteries, on the other hand, use thermal energy to operate, i.e., the energy created by temperature differences.

Therefore, the energy transfer in thermal batteries helps store heat when heat travels from one part of the battery setup to the other.

For that to happen, a thermal battery consists of two parts: a cool zone known as sink, and a hot source called source. Both these sides consist of compounds known as phase-changing materials (PCMs), which can change their state of matter on the basis of a physical/chemical reaction.

South Korean carmaker Kia Motors Corp has signed a deal to invest about $1.1 billion to build its first factory in India’s Andhra Pradesh.
