WHAT ARE DEDICATED FREIGHT CORRIDOR [DFC]

These are freight only railway lines to move goods between industrial heartlands in the North and Ports on the Eastern and Western Coasts.

The dedicated freight- only lines are being built along the four Key Transportation routes - known as the Golden Quadrilateral and connecting Delhi, Mumbai ,Chennai and Howrah and its two diagonals  (Delhi - Chennai, Mumbai - Howrah)

WHY DO WE NEED DFCS (Dedicated freight Corridor System)

  • Currently, our Railway lines are Mixed i.e Both Passengers and Freight operations performed on same Track. Due to this , Optimum utilization not done properly.
  • Also, The Golden Quadrilateral along with its two diagonals together carry little over half of the passenger traffic and account for close to 58% of freight traffic on the Indian Railway. So due to this, Many times exporters need to wait for 2-3 days.
  • Due to this also, Our Golden Quadrilateral now feel less saturated and efficiency gets increases.
That's why there is need of extra corridor which is dedicated to Freight Operations.
