INDIA MALDIVES INVASION CONTROVERSY

WHAT  JUST HAPPENED?

Subramanian Swamy, a member of the upper house of the Indian Parliament had come under intense criticism over his Tweet on Friday (24th August 2018).

Current President of Maldives - Abdulla Yameen.

Abdulla Yameen is anti-India OR we can say he is pro-China / pro-Pakistan. Many construction project recently given to Chinese companies and one important electricity project given to Pakistan

Mohamed Nasheed, is a Maldivian politician, who served as the fourth President of the Maldives from 2008 to 2012. [Former President]. During his tenure, India & Maldives relations were good.

 When Abdulla Yameen won the elections - He make such rules that all opposition leaders get arrested.

 Hence, Mohamed Nasheed currently resides outside the Maldives, Because if he go Maldives he'll get arrested.

 Recently, Subramanian Swamy met Mohamed Nasheed [Former President] and after the meeting/interview Subramanian Swamy gave the statement :

 "India should invade Maldives if rigging of election takes place".

[i.e. If Election not done properly, then India should send army and occupy Maldives]

Sep 2018, There are elections in Maldives. India is hoping that current president 'Abdulla Yameen's party will not came back in power in upcoming elections.

 If Abdulla Yameen's party came back in power, Then relations between India & Maldives may even get worse.

 In this response, Maldives Government summoned 'India's ambassador' and told How such statement is coming from your lawmaker. As, Subramanian Swamy is also a lawmaker in India along with member of Rajya Sabha.

Though, Indian Government distances itself from Swamy's Maldives invasion remark.

But Still  Maldives Government is currently in stress. Because If Indian army invades Maldives, Then this is not first time they are invading.

Even Earlier in 1988 They Invaded Maldives.

In 1988 - Maldives government was stable. But suddenly PLOTE, (People's Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam) along with some mercenaries attempt to overthrow the government (i.e change the government by either killing President, hack the Important Buildings and announce on radio that new government formed)

Then India send its army and save the current Maldives Government.
and Operation is called as 'Operation Cactus' by the Indian Armed forces.

 REACTION OF OPERATION CACTUS
  • India & Maldives Relation get stronger.
  • India received international praise for the operation.
  • US President & UK president appreciated.

So In 2018, Is Situation Same?

 NO, Situation is not same. China is operating so many projects there. US & UK may criticize.

And the current government is chosen by People, Not by overthrown the Previous Government (Like in 1988).

AFTERMYTH's OF SWAMY STATEMENT

 A statement cam from Maldives government that - Indian choppers to remain in Male (Maldives). (which is a good gesture).  (Because Earlier they mention India can took their coppers back)

 Few Years back, India has gifted two choppers to Maldives.

 WAY_FORWARD FOR INDIA

 Maldives is important for India as China already acquired one Island.

Way Forward for India is - We Quietly need to wait for Election.

If rigging occurs  - Then we need to talk with international community diaspora.
and need to ask the question from Maldives Government the reason of rigging.

 Military Intervention in 2018 is difficult as regional relationships with other small countries get impacted.
