CHINA's SOUTH PACIFIC SILK ROAD - THREAT TO AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND

BACKGROUND

'OCEANIA REGION' - is a geographic region comprising Australia, New Zealand and many others small islands like - 'Vanuatu'

All the coloured regions shown in Map belongs to 'OCEANIA REGION'

An orthographic projection of geopolitical Oceania

OCEANIA Region almost separate from other regions/continents of earth. And always it was assume that - in these regions 'Security threat' will never arise.

Because Trade Route are not important in these regions.

But Suddenly China's Maritime silk route/road project formerly referred to as One Belt One Road.(OBOR) is extending towards South Pacific ocean. ( As shown in Image Below).

and If we go further from South Pacific Ocean - OCEANIA Region started.

In 2013-2014 When China proposed China's Maritime Silk Route project and inaugurate 21st Maritime Silk Road Project, at that time, no one thinks that it will extend to South Pacific Ocean.

CHINA EXPANDING TO SOUTH PACIFIC

  • India is not the only one struggling to cope with China's Silk Road ambitious.
  • Down under, Australia and New Zealand are finding that China has begun to undermine(reduce/weaken) their long standing dominance over South Pacific
HOW IS CHINA THREAT TO AUSTRALIA-NEW ZEALAND

  • Beijing has significantly expanded its economic engagement and security diplomacy in the island nations across the Indo-Pacific.
  • Australia is worried that China is pushing for a military facility in Vanuatu.
  • Located northeast of Australia, Vanuatu’s population is barely 2,50,000 people, but its 80 islands generate a massive exclusive economic zone .
  • A defence policy review issued in Wellington last month underlined that China’s growing economic and political profile in the South Pacific could unravel the regional order and threaten New Zealand’s security.
  • Canberra recently scuttled a bid by China’s Huawei to build an undersea internet cable between Australia, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Recognising the potential dangers of the region being tied into China’s digital silk road, Canberra chose to put up the entire cost of the project estimated at $100 million.

Both Australia and New Zealand are not the Nuclear Arm Countries. Both countries are not the part of NATO. So, It's not compulsion that NATO countries stand together during any war. Both Countries don't have any strong navy.

AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND PARTNERING TO COMBAT CHINA

  • Australia and New Zealand are preparing to sign a wide-ranging security pact with South Pacific nations at a summit with the leaders of the islands in Nauru in September.
  • Canberra and Wellington are also upgrading their national surveillance capabilities in the South Pacific.
But China is not about to give up. President Xi Jinping is hosting a second summit with the leaders of the Pacific Island nations in Papua New Guinea on the margins of the APEC summit in November  2018 ( Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

OPPORTUNITY FOR INDIA

India’s resources will always be limited but still it can increase its impact in the region through collaboration with its partner countries like Australia, France, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand and the US — all of whom have great stakes in the South Pacific.
