GURUPRIYA BRIDGE,151 VILLAGES ABLE TO RETURN TO MAP AFTER 50 YEARS
BACKGROUND
'Godavari' is the second longest river of India, which started from Maharashtra and passed through Odhisa and falls into Bay of Bengal.
There is a tributary of Godavari river called as 'Sileru'.
There is a reservoir called as 'Balimela Reservoir' on the Sileru river is located in Malkangiri District,(in Southern Part of Odhisa). This Reservoir completed in 1988.
But,
Due to this reservoir some part of Odhisa get separated from main part of Odhisa. and The people stayed there unable to connect to main part of Odhisa from so many years.(approx 50 years).
IMPACT
Though people get benefit in terms of irrigation, farming But connectivity get less with main part of Odhisa and slowly and slowly backwardness get started in this separated area.
And Maoists notices on this separated area Paramilitary forces unable to reach or very less.
So Many Maoists came into that part (Maoists Insurgency) ( As this Part share border with Andhra Pradesh) and they attacked on forces.
So Malkangiri district gets benefit in terms of irrigation But on other side of coin this place occupied by Maoists.
PROBLEM
A decade ago around in 2008, 37 trained policeman became target practice for Maoists while they crossed the Balimela Reservoir in Malkangiri district of Odhisa in ferry

Slowly and Slowly - Such type of incidents gets increase. No Govt official and No Police officer can't enter into this area.
Local People also not opposed Maoists Because they are angry with government as No govt look into this matter and they became backward.
Many times 'Naveen Patniak' ( in 2000 even at that time he was CM ) and currently also He is CM of ODHISA request the central government and other agencies to execute it under Left Wing Extremist Area (LWE) affected areas but no concrete plan could emerge.
Central Govt told it's very risky.
Finally - STATE DECIDED TO GO ALONE
Foundation stone of Bridge was laid down by Naveen Patniak in 2000.
They started the 'Gurupriya Bridge' which has initial cost estimated in 1982 was 7 crore.
But, Finally constructed in 2018 with cost of 172.5 crore.
Because, Govt. main motive was to connect these people with main area with rest of India and Maoists Thinking of People get changed and they start doing business.
Challenges Faced During Construction
2011 - Malkangiri District Collector was abducted (Kidnapped)
2012,2015 - Many BSF Soldiers died.
But, Finally Bridge get completed and it's 109 Meter long. and due to this bridge around 30000 people able to get connected with rest of area and Hopefully they get prosperous life ahead
This Bridge provides a vital connectivity to 151 villages spread over eight panchayats with a population of 30,000 tribals that were cut-off from the mainland for the last five decades.
